Herby is entitled to his opinions.

And open minded, as in letting people going their own way.

And he is a damn good coder.

It is perfectly understandable that one takes a stand against agendas put onto a platform I would consider neutral. Which it isn't actually.

Amber-lang is a small community.
Let's focus on making this code work and improve it.

And I learned about a truckload of new options with this thread!

I have this server as a courtesy of a friend who happened to get a good
connection for decent price and who just want his machine(s) to be
utilized, for free (I should sometimes cover at least part of the
electricity bill; and I just paid for 8GB -> 16GB upgrade). And he is
committed to continue with it. Moving to other place should it be needed
is just one change of CNAME field in DNS.

My main problems are not getting vendor-locked to any provider
(including cloud HW provider, if possible), as they may push policies
that are nothing to do with technical point, but more with ideology.
Which is why I left Github and not going to use any of other free
contenders, namely bitbucket, gitlab cloud, and assembla.

So you are thinking about their 'Users' limit 5 - 20 - 40 - 100 - 200 people.
So Users should be unlimited. Ok.

On the other side Amber is useful as is as of now.

I am fine, if the code is moved to another place. An opportunity to
start with a new version number (0.2.0?, after a final snapshot
release on github) and rebuild the documentation and the issues list
from scratch (copy /adapt only currently relevant parts).  The future
platform does not necessarily have to be free. Maybe there are
solutions which make documentation easier.

Citing from https://docs.npmjs.com/misc/scope:

Scopes can be associated with a separate registry. This allows you to
seamlessly use a mix of packages from the public npm registry and one or
more private registries, such as npm Enterprise.

So, setting up own registry and kindly ask users of your module to
slightly rename the dependency should do the trick (of course, npm
itself is free to ditch scoped modules; OTOH, npm is open-source
*evilgrin* ).

Not sure what you intend to say.
Since you are a lawyer, I think you know that name and trademark conflicts is field where a huge number of lawyers are employed and involved with.

Re: [ANN] I am going to leave github

Not my area of expertise , I specialize on Shipping/Maritime law and I was not talking about the legal aspect of it , I was talking about the coding aspect of it. And Law has to deal with a lot of mess created by human beings, does not mean just because we make money out of this, we lawyers approve it.

Do you approve all the code , coders are involved with ? I assume from the fact you want to leave Github, obviously not ;)

_I_ am going to leave Github, not Manfred.

Hi,

Do you approve all the code , coders are involved with ? I assume from the fact you want to leave Github, obviously not ;)

it is not me who wants to leave GitHub.

Not sure what you intend to say.
Since you are a lawyer, I think you know that name and trademark conflicts is field where a huge number of lawyers are employed and involved with.

The NPM issue originates from a legal dispute, thus there is no correlation with a coding issue in the first place.

No, unfortunately.

Let me sum up the options we have:

- We stay on GitHub because we think it's important for the community,
and Herby will step down as head maintainer
- We agree to move to a self-hosted platform, and Herby will keep
  maintaining Amber

On one hand, I don't like the idea of moving out of GitHub, but on the
other hand Herby's been a great maintainer, I don't want Amber to be
without a maintainer and I don't know who could take his place.

Nico

I am not in favor of moving to a self-hosted solution.
The Amber community is not very big and the self-hosting is additional maintenance and administration work and reduces the project's exposure to the public.
This administration effort might seem fine in the first place, but it adds a second responsibility to the project.
It also poses the question of what happens if the then admin of the self-hosted solution has to step down from his job for some reasons?
Or what if he can not keep up with applying updates and exposes the project to severe security issues due to the vulnerable self-hosting platform?

Also, only providing a mirror on GitHub (or some other hosted service) means not accepting patches from there.
This also means that we need some kind of second maintainer responsible for dealing with getting patches from there to the main development branch.
Not to mention that we currently have very few contributions.

Personally, I would have nothing to move Amber to the cloud hosted solution of GitLab.com if the discussion were only about using non-free software and vendor lock-in.
However, Herby's reasons are of a political nature not from this area.

Also, I would refrain from using hosting software with fewer features than GitLab or GitHub.

The problem is that Herby is doing a great job as a maintainer but his political reasons to leave GitHub prevent using any kind of cloud hosted service and maybe even some of the free software such as GitLab.
If we need to find a new maintainer, I am also not sure who could take this place.
I am currently in the final phase of my PhD and don't have time for it, so even this discussion is taking away too much time from me.

Best,
Manfred

No, unfortunately.

Let me sum up the options we have:

- We stay on GitHub because we think it's important for the community,
and Herby will step down as head maintainer
- We agree to move to a self-hosted platform, and Herby will keep
  maintaining Amber

On one hand, I don't like the idea of moving out of GitHub, but on the
other hand Herby's been a great maintainer, I don't want Amber to be
without a maintainer and I don't know who could take his place.

As bystander, here is how I see situation.

From value point I would say that Herby is much more valuable to Amber than Github, and there does not seem to be anyone ready/able to step into his shoes. So it seems that at the moment this is a nobrainer.

For long term, jumping from one source host to another does not seem like a great idea, especially if it has not been wished for/endorsed by larger group of project stakeholders. So there will be some sort of price to pay. Lastly, moving to self hosted solution seems like a particularly bad idea. So mirror on site like github, with actionable plan how to switch if (pessimist would say when) Herby, gets tired, goes on 3 week holidays in alps, or any other imaginable hiccup.

Lastly, I have not been paying attention to politics of source control, and I take there could be some serious issues. However, switching from one entity that has written rules, and significant number of stakeholders, to single person entity without written out rules often ends up in bitter disappointment.

I wish to thank all people who have contributed to Amber and made it what it is today.
