[ANN] Roassal2 on VisualWorks

abergel
Dear all,

We have put quite some effort on porting Roassal2 to VisualWorks.
Here is a small video that show what we are up to: https://vimeo.com/108835834

Roassal2 is available on Cincom store under the bundle Roassal2-full. Roassal2 uses Cairo to do all the rendering.

People not aware of Roassal may find a description here:
http://agilevisualization.com
http://objectprofile.com/Roassal.html
https://www.facebook.com/ObjectProfile

Feedback are very welcome! Let us know what you think

Cheers,
The Object Profile crew

Re: [ANN] Roassal2 on VisualWorks

What has been ported is the following:
  - Core of Roassal2
  - GraphBuilder, to build graphs (made of edges and nodes, what is shown on the video)
  - Charter to build nice charts and graphics (code is available in the bundle, soon we will produce a video, stay tuned!).

It would be fantastic to hear feedback. In particular situations where you feel Roassal is not able to directly address. Making sure your visualization problems are properly addressed and solved is our major concern :-)

Cheers,
Alexandre

Re: [ANN] Roassal2 on VisualWorks

Hi, Alexandre,

1) I'm following what you are doing from a long time, and I have to say that you guys are doing a very nice job. But I had no real playground to test it, at least up to this moment.
2)Now, this morning I was thinking at some way to graphically show relation between objects and relations between tables on my ORM tool, and I suppose your work could be used for this. So, I suppose you will receive feedback from me, or, more easily, ask for help.... I'm a bit worried for the use of Cairo, but I hope that on Windows and Mac it would be not to difficult to find the right library.

So, for the moment, thanks again, But stay tuned... it' a spare time work, but I'll get there. BTW: there is some example you can suggest to be used as a starting point for this kind of job?

ciao

Hi, Alexandre,

I have my first questions: which version of VW should I use for loading it? is the latest version of Roassal2 (0.5) the good one to load (there is a comment that says is not final yet).

thanks

We are using VW7.10 and you simply need to load the Roassal2-full bundle from cincom store

We have a massive documentation effort going on. The AgileVisualization Book is on its way: http://agilevisualization.com
I think this is a good starting point. The book is written for Pharo, and you probably need to adapt it a bit.

Assuming Roassal2 uses VW's Cairo package: just install the Cairo for Windows/Mac components from the VW disk.

On Linux the Cairo library is generally installed on the system, although if you have 32-bit VW on 64-bit Linux you probably have to install the 32-bit libraries yourself:
   Ubuntu 12.04      sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
   Ubuntu 13.10      sudo apt-get install libcairo2:i386
openSUSE 12.2  sudo zypper  install libCairo2-32bit
We've found the CentOS Cairo support to be buggy: errors displaying ellipses on some versions. Fedora was fine.

All the best,
Steve
