OK, so we seem to be sorted now.
Background
Our server in New Jersey was hit with two attacks; one was code red
which started to eat all of our ISP's bandwidth and then 2. by an
attack that put megabytes of MP3s on our drives. Both of these
resulted in our ISP taking us off line. I might add that we were not
the only ones - they had over 30 machines hit in total and are talking
to the FBI now.
Current position
We have acquired a 24/7 ISDN line with a permanent IP address here in
the UK which we are using to serve the Newsgroups from here. Although
not very fast, it at least works. We have attempted to load up as much
of the history of the newsgroups as possible.
Comp.lang.smalltalk.objectstudio is the one exception to there because
it was a local newsgroup to our server and, unless we can recover its
postings from the hard disk of the other server, we have lost all of
the previous messages. We apologise for this.
We have now opened up the server for outside access. If you have any
problems with the service, other than the speed, please contact us on
[hidden email].
Our website also went down and we are in the process of rebuilding
that to go on our local server. This will take another 24 hours or so.
What is coming
We have some hopes of an ADSL 500KB line coming in within the next few
weeks. When this happens, we will transfer our server to that unless
our NJ server comes back before then. NJ is preferable because it has
at least 3 T! connections but we shall wait and see.
Once again, thank you for your patience in this and the expressions of
support we have received. We hope that things will now be back to
normal.
Lastly, we now have the capacity to expand our involvement in VAST
through the Internet and will be announcing some new products and
initiatives over the next few weeks - look out for them.
Regards to all
