Is that the Squeak Logo Morph or just part of the bitmap?  I hope the Morph!

It doesn't work for me. Squeak trunk has a menu bar on top with a
Squeak logo on its left. Then this alternative background puts a
second Squeak logo just below, a very different logo from the logo in
place. Grey is an all right colour to my taste but I'm not sure how
good it will mix with the colourful windows since it is a very dark
grey.

It's nice to see such efforts here. Just saying that I would not like
see in this particular alternative background in the trunk.

Thanks! For the lazy people :-) execute this in your trunk image to try
it out:

   World color:
     (InfiniteForm with:
       (HTTPSocket httpJpeg:
'http://ftp.squeak.org/trunk/backgrounds/swp.jpg')).

If you like it run this to make it the default:

   MorphicProject defaultFill:
     (InfiniteForm with:
       (HTTPSocket httpJpeg:
'http://ftp.squeak.org/trunk/backgrounds/swp.jpg')).

Cheers,

We don't need no stinkin' JPEG!

World fillStyle: ((GradientFillStyle
        ramp: { 0.0 -> Color white darker. 0.2 -> Color gray. 0.8 -> Color black })
        origin: 200@30;
        direction: Display extent;
        radial: true;
        yourself).

I can't find the mouse-eyes morph. Somebody must have stolen it.

Also, well-done for not choosing a colour scheme that looks like it
came from the babies' nursery.

The image is made with blender. The logo is an extruded version of the Squeak SVG file.

Yes, the gray seems a too dark, but I think a lighter gray background works perfectly with the colorful windows.

You could even create that interactively - but something is broken in trunk for setting the World's gradient colors. Switching to a radial gradient and setting origin and direction works fine.

I understand your feeling. This is however exactly how inconsistencies
are introduced in the UI. People feel many different things that can
be totally unrelated. We have seen some improvements in that respect
since the trunk has appeared but there is still much work to do. It's
important to filter cool things (in or out) and make sure it fits the
direction taken.

Oh, please. This is some kind of wallpaper! It's sole function is to spice up the look a little. Have a look at the tons of wallpapers containing the Windows, Mac, Ubuntu, Victoria Secret or whatever logos. Most of them are playful variations of the original logo. No one would say that this would make the UI inconsistent?!

Alex, I am not trying to dramatize or even criticize your work. It is
really about conscientization. This is perhaps unrelated but this is
also the first thing that popped out in my mind when I saw your
screenshot. A wallpaper may spice up the look a little bit but won't
save Squeak UI anyway. The UI is under par. We may very well change
our habits if the consistency of the UI remains in the back of all our
heads and changes brought to Squeak in that respect will be mostly
positive. There is nothing wrong to come up with some kind of
wallpaper and equally nothing wrong to express how I feel about Squeak
UI. ;)

Now, we're going to have a lot of new fans if you get Victoria Secret
to back up a project like Squeak...
