The current Squeak unix image version 4.0.3 dated 13 April 2010
looks for Squeak 3.9 sources on startup; there's a suspicious
string in the image, "SqueakV39". If that's edited to SqueakV40
the image accepts the current 4.0 sources file. Whether this is
an actual fix or a palliative I've no idea.
