Dolphin V6 CE - Setup uses 99% CPU and never finish

joe-2
Hi!

I have no success installing Dolphin V6 Community Edition on my Dell/Windows
XP but my Dolphin Professional V4 just works fine.

The setup.exe program just seems to stop just at the point of installing
MSVCR71.DLL in C:\WINDOWS\system32 and the CPU usage goes to 99% and never
completes the installation.

After cancelling the installation, I do have some files installed in folder
"C:\Program Files\Object Arts\Dolphin Smalltalk 6.0" but when I try to
execute the Dolphin.exe file I get the following error message: Fail to open
image file 'C:\Program Files\ Object Arts\Dolphin Smalltalk 6.0\Dolphin.img'.
Naturally, some files are missing since the setup never completed.

Does anybody have an idea on what cause the setup to have this strange
behaviour?

Is it possible that my Corporate ??!! Anti-virus software (VirusScan
Enterprise V8.0.0) just messes everything. It would be very unfortunate
since I cannot deactivate it (the corporate Borg rules the individual
mind!!!).

Any ideas or work around possible.

Thanks.

This seems to be a problem with the installer that we use, QSetup. We
had one similar report during the beta test period but now that DCE is
released (and free) we are obviously getting a lot more people
installing the product and experiencing this issue. I have written to
Pantaray (whoi make QSetup) and filed a bug report.

In the meantime, I suspect that the installation is hanging, either
during the copy of MSVCR71.DLL (which may be in use by another program)
or during the setup of the registry keys for shortcuts etc. My feeling
is that it is the latter and that all of the files are actually in
place.

Double-clicking Dolphin.exe won't work. What you need is a shortcut
icon that starts Dolphin.exe with the fresh install image as a
parameter, i.e. a "target" of:

"C:\Program Files\Object Arts\Dolphin Smalltalk 6.0\Dolphin.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Object Arts\Dolphin Smalltalk 6.0\Professional (Fresh
Install).img"

Make the "Start in" working directory your My Documents folder:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Bower\My Documents"

Double clicking this icon should get you into the Dolphin Unlock Dialog.

Let me know if this helps.

Andy, look at Agentix Installer: http://www.aginstaller.com

It works on all versions of Windows, creates a highly compressed
single-exe setups,
supports multilingual installations and has a complete set of the
gentleman's features -
creation of shortcuts, creation of registry and .INI entries, version
checking, complete
uninstall capabilities and more. It has it's own scripting mechanism,
but it's easy to learn
and use.

Agentix Installer really is nice and is easy to use, producing small
setup files due to the fact that its overhead is the very low (48Kb
only) in size.

It is reasonably priced and has been working good for me for several
years.

I've received a (quick!) response from Pantaray. They seem to think
that the problem is caused by the fact that we chose to "flaunt"
Microsoft's advice about where to install the MSVCx71 DLLs. We were
continuing to add then to the System32 directory when thjey should
really go in the application program files folder.

I've created a new installer that contains this change. I'd be grateful
if you could re-download and try this out to see if it fixes the
problem. The installer should announce itself as version 2006.6.02.2.

Alexey,

Thanks for the suggestion but over the years we have changed setup
builders FAR too often and have already spent well over $2500 in the
process (InstallShield was the worst culprit both in terms of being a
money sink and a usability nightmare). This all seems ridiculous
considering that Dolphin isn't that complicated a product from a setup
point of view.

We're very happy with QSetup (assuming we can address this current
issue - see my latest reply) so I'd rather not change again. I
understand that a lot of our users have had good success with InnoSetup
too.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the new installer version (2006.6.02.2).

Everything seems to worked fine this time.

So far the most important change I noticed was the nice and well organized
ToolBox in the View Composer.

This is a very welcome enhancement to this, by any other means, already
excellent tool.

Good work.

So far, those are my first observations.

Thanks

Hi Andy:

I fully understand your point of view about not changing installers all
days.

Only in case you need sometime to consider another alternative, I'm
using from some years NSIS (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page).

It's open and free, then to try it you only need a bit of time.

Just my 0,02.

Best Regards.
Germán.

I submit that MSI files can make almost anything complicated.  In
fairness, Dolphin is certainly not trivial to install.

Indeed.  If you switch one more time, you should consider Inno.  It
won't create MSI files, but the installers will work and with minimal
hassle.

Have a good one,

Bill

I would suggest InnoSetup for a .exe based install, or WiX for an msi
generator that can be made part of a build process.

Personally I use InnoSetup. At work I use WiX.
