Dolphin XP 5.0.1 Live Update

Andy Bower
Folks,

A Live Update patch to bring Dolphin XP up to version 5.0.1 is now
available. This includes all the fixes that have previously been referred to
in the newsgroup as patch level 1. You can read about the fixes here:

http://www.object-arts.com/Lib/Update/Dolphin/5.0/Professional/PL1.htm

Please note that due to a bug (#942) in the Live Update code that was
shipped with 5.0, you will see a "Not Signed Warning" from DolphinSure when
you try to install this patch. You should continue with the install at this
point, after which you will see the real Object Arts certificate used to
sign the update code. When you okay this certificate the patch will be
installed in your image. Don't forget to save your image after installing
the update.

Be aware that Live Update does not upgrade the Fresh Install image of your
Dolphin installation, only your working image. Hence, if you choose to run
Fresh Install in future to get back to a clean image then you'll have to
reapply the patch.

Also note that the minor fix #925 requires an update to the Dolphin VM. This
cannot be installed by Live Update itself, since the MS Installer would then
think that the installation had been tampered with and would try to repair
it by copying the old VM back over the new one. If this fix is important to
you then you'll have to download a full new version from the website and
install this over the top of your existing installation. Take care to export
your packages first so they can be re-imported into the new image.

Andy Bower

Would the following suffice: download and install the new version, then
patch the existing image?  Hopefully that would replace the VM in a way that
doesn't offend the installer w/o having to rebuild the image??

Does your MSI front end allow you to make updates (or whatever the right
name is).  You might be able to issue a very small MSI file that simply
tweaks the VM.  I wouldn't try it unless the front end makes it obvious
because the rules for such things are numerous and complicated.  If your
vendor was able to tame all of that, it could be very useful to folks with
just a thin wire.  Now I'm off to download the whole thing over a T4 :)

Have a good one,

Bill

Andy,

I'm seeing a couple of problems -

If I try and download any of the "MSI Only" packages I end up with an
instantaneous download and a file of 0 bytes.  I'm not sure what should be
happening but I guess it isn't that?  It may, of course, be something
strange about my XP/IE6/firewall settings?

I then downloaded and installed the full pro package. I'm sure I did get and
have installed the right file (Dolphin.exe now shows an updated timestamp
and version number) but the splash screen still shows 5.0 and

VMLibrary default fullVersion

answers 'Dolphin Smalltalk 2002 release 5.00' when I assume both should now
refer to 5.01 (as it did when I originally installed the live update).

The only odd thing I can see is DolphinCR005.dll and DolphinVM005.dll both
have a file version of "2002, 5, 0, 1" but a product version of "2002, 5, 0,
0" - which may be nothing to do with it.  BTW, one of the DolphinCR005 file
parameters still mentions Beta4

I've uninstalled/reinstalled everything a couple of times now, checking all
the files (including *.msi) and folders were deleted before reinstalling,
and it still happens.  All the source fixes that I checked seem to be there
(don't know about #925 though) so it looks like it is just the version
number that is showing incorrectly.

Sorry about that. It was a problem with failed FTP copies up to the download
server.

Another problem. Although the installed image was at 5.0.1 it didn't not
report it as such.

The file versions and product versions do not necessarily have to match. It
is the product version that is important and we have now ensured that the VM
and Compiler report 2002,5,0,1 (5.0.1) which they didn't in the download you
took on Friday (I can't find the mention of Beta4, BTW).

In short, although the Live Update should have worked okay, the full install
downloads from Friday were all a bit of a mess. I believe these problems
have all now been fixed. I should stress, though, that you can just use Live
Update to bring your image up to 5.0.1 and don't need to take the full
install unless issue #925 is important to you.

Sounds okay.

One can do "patches" with InstallShield but it just seemed like an added
complication so we chose not to make use of it.

Andy,

WindowsExplorer
Select DolphinCR005.dll
Right Click for Properties
Version tab
Special Build Description entry

Not particularly important, I just noticed it in passing

Thanks. I downloaded the msi and everything now looks fine.

It just slightly simplifies the way I reconstitute my working image if I can
start directly from the distributed files rather than from a patched set of
image files or having to reapply the live update. Besides, I've already paid
for the ISP bandwidth so I might as well use it :-)

 From the update list -

~=~=~=
925

Crash dump truncates error log rather than appending to it

DVE

Needs new VM, so not patched by Live Update. If this fix is important to
you, please download and install the latest version.

I upgraded the installation of Dolphin to 5.0.1 Friday.

Based on the fact my Friday downloads might have been bad, I downloaded
again and attempted to reinstall.  When I do, first I get the Preparing to
Install... dialog, then a message box saying  "The file
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Instructions\Dolphin Professional 5.0.msi already
exists.  Would you like to replace it".

Answering "Yes", I then get a dialog box "The installation package could not
be opened.  Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid
Windows Installer package."

All this is on Windows XP Pro.

Could the files on the server still be bad?

Also, I've been working on an image that was created with 5.0, updated via
Live Update, and is running after Installed Dolphin 5.0.1.  I noticed some
anomalies where the cursor does not seem to change back from an hourglass to
an arrow in certain situations. I'll try to isolate.

925 is important for deployed apps, and I'm getting closer to being able to
start fielding things.  The delay is nothing specific to D5; it's timing of
the release with respect to big changes to my code.  My original plan was to
deploy D5 apps based on a straight port of my D4 code, but, I finally had to
jump into the bigger changes and they aren't quite complete yet.

Now the question: did you update the ToGo stub to get the VM fix in deployed
apps?

Have a good one,

Bill

Jeffrey,

FWIW, I downloaded the individual msi file (all that you really need on XP)
late yesterday and it installed correctly - and it's around 4M smaller than
the full download.

Hmm.. I checked this out and (surprisingly) it wasn't YAFTPE (Yet Another
FTP Error). In fact the installer had been built incorrectly for some reason
and then uploaded to the server complete with errors. It's been fixed now
and I've verified the new download this morning which it seems okay. Sorry
about all these problems.

There is also mention of beta, specifically "Welcome to Dolphin 5.0 Beta" in the file
"Read Me.rtf" that was distributed with the first public release.  I don't know
whether it is still included in the updated version.

I looked and it has not appeared in Google Groups either ;<
