Anyone tried this recently? Does it work, or should I just revert to
Windows when I want to do Smalltalk? P. |
Last time I tried it (2 weeks ago), is basically worked. The only (and
major!) problem I had seems to be related with the RichTextEdit Control Dolphin uses. It seems that WINE doesn't supply this Windows Control. Therefore you are not able to view or edit code. BTW: I used CrossOver Office 1.20 which is an enhanced version of WINE (extended regarding several Windows API Calls and the ability to install M$ Office). If you need a true Linux Smalltalk you could try VisualWorks or IBM
VisualAge Smalltalk, both of which work on Windows and Linux. Both of these Smalltalks are very good and NC versions are available for download. RH. That isn't the point I think.
Several people that I know (myself included) like too much Dolphin and we wants to adopt Delphin as our main (and unique) development tool (no another (and expensive!) Smalltalk) and many of our are dreaming with the day when Dolphin ST run natively in Linux and produce native Linux exes. Dream is free! Smalltalk/X runs on Linux, FreeBSD and other UNIX machines.
The latest version is free for commercial use. You can create native applications with it. There is a win32 port, but it is not as good as UNIX versions (my main complain is that repaint is does not always work reliably when window is resized). There is a difference between great tool and a tool which fits the best. "Germán S. I know ST/X, but his lack of documentation and users that
can support problems in a group like this is a problem for me. And, by other hand, I like Dolphin. Regards. Well if there is enough of a community we could write an open source
vm for dolphin and wrap qt or something for the widgets. It might be fun. IMHO dolphin has the best gui frameworks of any smalltalk. I'm surprised the others haven't ripped it off yet :-). It would be nice if it had native threads though. i tried wine and winex (cannot remember version numbers now) on dolphin
about 2 months ago and could not get past the install... I tried Dolphin XP some time ago using CrossOver Office 1.3.1 (a comercial M$ Office capable wine version). Everything (including the installation) went fine. Just one exception. It was not possible to do something usefull in the IDE because wine doesn't seem to include an RTF control. Therefore no Workspace or Browser works ;-( CU, Udo |

Therefore no Workspace or > Browser works ;-( You can workaround that problem by using the flexibility of MVP to replace the workspace views with standard multiline edits. 1) From the class browser edit SmalltalkWorkspace 'Default view', and mutate it from a RichTextEdit to a MultilineTextEdit 2) Do the same to SmalltalkWorkspace 'Method source' Hey presto, you have now eliminated RTF controls from browser and workspaces.
