Arden,

If you don’t mind me asking, aside from annoying prospect customers with acquisition forms, what does Cincom get out of making personal version so hard to download? I get a sense that whomever decides to use the product in commercial space, will come looking for a license anyway. Heck, Microsoft’s most expensive products don’t even require license keys these days, i.e. SQL Server 2012 Enterprise ISO can be downloaded and installed without restrictions and proper license is close to $15k per pair of physical cores; clearly they aren’t afraid of people misusing their products, at least those folks who pay for things anyway, and others wouldn’t have paid even if you got them to fill out some form.

Pharo – one click on the home page (http://www.pharo-project.org)

GemStone – two clicks from the home page, one if Google sends you straight to downloads page (http://seaside.gemstone.com)

node.js – two clicks from the home page (http://nodejs.org)

Ruby – two clicks from the home page (http://www.ruby-lang.org)

I could go on…

Hi Boris;

I think our process is pretty simple - we try to make it as easy as possible.

Most of the examples you use are open source.

Microsoft uses online validation for their OS's (which are their mainstay products), with re-validation needed for some hardware changes.

From my perspective filling out a form is preferable to license keys or online validation which I think is more intrusive.

I think our developer programs make it extremely easy for the community to get the product and give feedback.

Thank you for the feedback.

Re: Download free version don't works?

Boris Popov, DeepCove Labs (SNN)

Arden,

The way I see it: one person abandoning download process because of the form is one potential customer lost. Most folks hearing about VisualWorks are impulse evaluators, if they don’t get it running quickly, they’ll leave and look at Pharo instead.

Arden, I would enhance the new user experience to download products by doing the following:

a)  registration form where I simply can login and download one or more products

     1)  register or login
     2)  download software products

b)  if this is really part of a developer program, just have users go to the following page instead:

     http://developer.cincom.com  or similar page

     Then simply apply (a)

Note:  Just build it out as the one stop shop for products, forums, blogs, tutorials, and so on.  I find myself lost at times
as to where to download stuff.

c)  make the download more visible to the user

jetbrains.com as a commercial company selling tools has a very good user download experience

     1)  products are clearly displayed on the main page

     2)  selecting a product takes one to the product's profile page

Note:  I really like to see screenshots of the products, their associated descriptions, videos, and visible download link.

In short, I feel that a user shouldn't have to fill this form out no more than once to download software and the product's information should be easily accessible from the first page.

On a side note,  the things that get me execited about Smalltalk is seeing the syntax, tools of the environment, sample applications, and the IDE in action.  Would this be a better option for Cincom Smalltalk landing page?  Also, there's talk
about other languages but seeing is beliving

Thank you for the feedback.

Hi Boris;

I meant to write before an <ENTER> key, there's talk about Cincom Smalltalk's speed on the landing page but seeing it in action is everything here.

Thank you for the feedback.

Regards

Arden Thomas

I could go on…

Hi German;

The Personal use downloads are temporarily offline while we do some maintenance.

I expect it back online either today or Monday.

Please do NOT share links.

Sorry for the confusion.
