Downloading VW7.8 or latest stable of VW?

Conrad Taylor
Hi, could some explain in one paragraph or less why one cannot download VW Smalltalk from it's own website?  I heard that it was an issue with not being able to ship/release components with crypto algorithms outside the US.  If this is the case, why don't you remove this stuff?  This is a huge turnoff for someone that wants to give Smalltalk a fair chance:

I was very motivated to pull down the latest stable release but wait I cannot and I must wait for the media to be mailed.

That is in fact what has been done. However, nothing goes quickly or conforms to what one would consider sensible when it involves legal departments and the US government. I hope Cincom will have a version up for download soon (but I've been hoping for soon for a while) from which the cryptographic algorithm implementations have been removed. That would also enable the resumption of vw-dev downloads. However, there still has to be official validation that a version with that code removed can be freely downloaded. And yes, it's a serious problem. In the slightly longer term, my hope is that that functionality can be entirely replaced with code that does not actually implement the algorithms, but simply delegates them to the cryptographic libraries found in any operating system, web browser, or video game these days, and that the US government will not consider providing the ability to actually call libraries that are already there a risk to its national security.

Alan,

So while we are waiting for the legal departments to sort things out -- when can we get a vwnc CD mailed out?
Ive sent 2 requests so far with no results.

Dear all wannabee testers,

please make sure that you include your complete address and phone number. Otherwise FedEx won’t ship. We’ll try to contact you if your forgot it, yet this is avoidable overhead for everybody.

Re: Downloading VW7.8 or latest stable of VW?

Nowak, Helge

Err .. ehmm … I just see I should have read the subject of the email more closely. Apologies for creating confusion!

To make it clear: as long as we are not able to make the nc versions of the new release available we ship the older nc release (VisualWorks 7.7.1 nc and ObjectStudio 8.2.1) on physical media so that anybody who wants to take a first look at Cincom Smalltalk can do so.

For all the rest I refer to what Alan has said already.

Cheers

Helge

Alan,

If I recall, there was some consideration about simply using OpenSSL et al for crypto back in the day when the native implementations were considered, so it sounds like we might be coming full circle on that project?

Also, I’m a bit puzzled by the lawyers stand on this. I’d mentioned in the past that we have had no trouble getting digital downloads of products containing materials subject to crypto export laws in the US from US-based companies like RSA after clicking a check-mark at the end of a very long export T&C document, so why is it that you are being restricted to such an unreasonable extent?

Re: Downloading VW7.8 or latest stable of VW?

Pierre-34
Hi all,
If vwnc7.8 is unavailable for download (for a long time now), may we have a link to download an older version (VW7.6 for example) ?
Thanks,
    Pierre

Well, I finally received DVD/CDs from Cincom today which contains the follow:

- VisualWorks 7.7.1 NC
- WebVelocity Lite 1.1
- ObjectStudio 8.2.1 NC

I'm not sure as to what changed between 7.7.1nc and 7.8nc-nov10.3 but either one should be able to get through the basics
during my refreshing phase of Smalltalk.
