EMSRV connects but cannot RE-connect to the same library

Instantiations mailing list

I'm looking for help about a "does not exist" error on a library I copied from a server that we're trying to retire.

We're migrating our Envy server from a Windows Server 2003 to a Windows Server 2012.  I installed EMSRV that comes with VA Smalltalk 8.6.1.  emadmin stat shows the version as "7.2 Oct 20 2014 18:01:13 (EST)"  I've double-checked all of the run as adminstrator and act as part of the operating system type of settings that I know about.

I used emadmin to copy two libraries over to the new server.
One of the copied library files works just fine (as does the default mgr86.dat file).
However, one of the copied libraries has a problem.

I updated abt.ini to point to the new server and file.  When I launch my saved image, I get the expected prompt to re-cache pointers when I start up my image:

After a while, it says it worked ok...:

Now is where the problems begin.
If you save the image and restart VA Smalltalk, you always get prompted to re-cache, even though it was the exact same library that the image was saved with:

And Tools-->Server-->Reconnect To Server... says that the file does not exist, even though the image is already connected to it (and confirmed by emadmin list).

Of the files shown in that last file dialog:

mgr.dat was copied from the other server.
rwmgr.dat was copied from the other server: it has no problems, same steps.
mgr86.dat was installed with the server: it has no problems, either.

I could understand if I missed a step somewhere about permissions and such, but then I would expect the same problems with mgr.dat and rwmgr.dat.  I'm confused. :-)

That does sound bizarre. Definitely verify the security properties of the problematic file against one of the good ones. Ensure the owner and access permissions are consistent for both. (Admittedly, I don't see how inconsistencies could have produced the results you experienced!)

Re: EMSRV connects but cannot RE-connect to the same library

Hi John,

Take a look around to see if Windows has saved the file, after it was re-cached, in some virtual store folder.  Windows may not want to let the original be replaced but may not tell you about it.  I'm not sure this is your problem but it is worth a look.

Re: EMSRV connects but cannot RE-connect to the same library

RESOLUTION:  Use EMSRV version 7.1a instead of 7.2 for now.   NEW Case 57659: Emsrv 7.2 windows executable has problems opening large libraries.

In working with Instantiations Support, we determined that the older EMSRV version could consistently open the library file.  The "bad" library file that I copied is 5GB whereas the "good" library file that I copied is only 250MB.  We assume the file size difference is the problem since they "are using a different build system for 7.2 and it's possible some compiler flags did not get translated over correctly."
