ENVY repository synchronization - possible?

As I recall, there is not really a good way to keep two repositories in sync in an automated fashion.  Can anyone offer a working counter-example?  What are you doing to make it work if it is possible?

How much in sync?  Two-way sync of very edition of every method?  Or just as applications or config maps are versioned?

Best is two way syn of every method in real time, but versioned apps/maps might be acceptable
