ESVM40.dll failure on Windows 2003 R8 updated Aug 17th Windows Update

skrish

After the Update to Windows 2003 Server with the Updates on Security patches, the VA6.0 that we use for one specific purpose stopped opening up the dev image window ( or even the simple VA6.0 setup.exe will not open ).

After quite a bit of trial and error found that replacing it with esvm40.dll from the VA7.0 it works fine.

There are no logs / traps at all.. no trace of why the abt.exe starts and quits.

Wanted to just understand what is it that may have changed for the original esvm40.dll not to work.

Any clues..?

I have no memory of pertinent Windows/VA versions here - but might you be able to disable Data Execution Prevention and see if that fixes it?

Wayne is correct, your problem is almost certainly due to Windows DEP which was introduced in WinXP and WinServer 2003 service packs. See our FAQ on this issue: Q: How do I workaround the failure of VisualAge Smalltalk V6.0.2 and earlier on Windows XP SP2 and later?
