No I did not because I am in a fast local area netwrok.
SSh documentation mention compression should not be used on fast LAN:

> and the “level” can be controlled by the CompressionLevel option for protocol version 1. Compression is desirable on modem lines and other slow connections, but will only
> slow down things on fast networks. The default value can be set on a host-by-host basis in the configuration files; see the Compression option.
As you mention it, I tested it and it happens to improve the situation.
So I guess the VM does not play nice with X server and may only transfer
X pixmap over the wire, so the cost of compression will be lower than
the cost to send hudge pixmap over the wire in this specific situation.
