File Content Encoding under Linux and Gemstone 3.x

GLASS mailing list
Hello,

I was asked a simple question and I could not answer it:

If I read a file content (file is in Windows standard code page with character > 127) with Gemstone (e.g. aGsFile contents) I get a string with the content of the file ...the bytes are not changed in any way I assume ....

But what happens if I send asUnicodeString to that string ... how does it converts the string (what code page is assumed ?)

In earlier projects this does not happen to me, because I try to find out the code page of those files by using Linux tools, do some conversion to UTF8 and then read the file using UTF8 command.

Marten
