Files in trunk?!

Göran Krampe
Hi guys!

Ok, perhaps I am just DAFT but what is this:

http://ftp.squeak.org/trunk/
        Squeak4.1.1.zip          15-Apr-2010 05:15   13M
        Squeak4.1.zip            18-Apr-2010 00:22   13M

...and firing up those images show that 4.1 is 9957 and 4.1.1 is... 9938?

IMHO any normal person would think that 4.1.1 is *newer* than 4.1, right?

Perhaps this has been discussed at lenght - but this is just confusing.

Also, I can't for my life figure out how to "track trunk". Where do we
explain how to get onto trunk? So that I can just hit "Load updates" and
be on the edge?

Feeling like a damn n00b here.

regards, Göran

hi goran,
iirc andreas first released 4.1 as 4.1.1, and after
people complained made another release called 4.1.
so 4.1.1 should be removed/ignored.
the next version is expected (at least by me)
to be called 4.2 or 5.0.

Indeed. This directory needs serious cleanup.

How about moving all those pre-releases to some place inside the 4.1 directory?

We should put a fully updated Squeak-Trunk.zip there that has the proper update url set already. Anyone up for it? Would be nice to update regularly too.

We could *begin* by explaining on the Download page on squeak.org that:

        How to get onto Trunk:

        1. Download 4.1
        2. Open Preferences, set url to blablabla.
        3. Hit "Load Updates".

That would have done the trick nicely for me.

Bert is too modest to say that this is the kind of trunk image he
recently made for Etoys.  It works a treat, and neatly sidesteps any
need to scrabble around for the latest instructions. (

I made Squeak-Trunk.zip:
1. Image from http://ftp.squeak.org/trunk/Squeak4.1.zip
2. Update url pointed to trunk
3. Updated to 10154

It's too big to attach here.  Where should I send it?

Just upload it somewhere and share the url.

Evaluating [Smalltalk cleanUp: false] may be a good idea as the last step
to reduce the size of the image.

I didn't do this, but I will if that's what we want.

Sorry 'bout that. I hadn't cleaned out the trunk directory after the
release. It's empty now and I'll either put up Sean's version or I'll
make a new trunk image on the weekend.
