   New VAST Release Coming Soon, ESUG Conference, Camp Smalltalk NMU, Upcoming Conferences

Dear VA Smalltalk User,

     There's a lot going on at Instantiations and in the Smalltalk community so we thought we'd send out this brief news bulletin to help you stay abreast of the latest developments.


     The European Smalltalk Users Group Conference (ESUG) was held in Prague, Czech Republic August 22-26. Instantiations was a Platinum sponsor and two of our senior technical people (John O'Keefe, CTO and Seth Berman, VP of Engineering) presented papers. The conference was very successful and included several dozen technical papers and the International Workshop on Smalltalk (more papers) plus "Show Us Your Project", an opportunity for attendees to show off their latest Smalltalk projects.

Camp Smalltalk NMU (Northern Michigan University) - September 15-18, 2016

     You are invited to Camp Smalltalk NMU! Come join the fun September 15-18 in beautiful Marquette, Michigan! 

There is no set schedule. Some of the areas that will surely be covered include:

  • Smalltalk on small devices, such as Scratch on Raspberry PI
  • Web frameworks such as Seaside
  • Virtual machine implementations
  • Data processing applications
  • Language design, Smalltalk and beyond
  • Education (many students will be present)

FAST-10th International Conference on Smalltalk Technologies (Smalltalks)

     The Fundación Argentina de Smalltalk (FAST, http://www.fast.org.ar) invites you to the 10th International Conference on Smalltalk Technologies (Smalltalks), to be held from November 9th through November 11th at the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, Facultad Regional Tucumán, located in the city of Tucumán, Argentina. Everyone, including teachers, students, researchers, developers and entrepreneurs, are welcome as speakers or attendees.

     This year, we are extremely happy to announce Ralph Johnson and Gilad Bracha as keynote speakers.

     Ralph Johnson is part of the Gang of Four that gave us the language to talk about Design Patterns in software.  He taught Smalltalk at the University of Illinois with widespread influence on the community.  His students include Don Roberts and John Brant, authors of the Refactoring Browser.

     Gilad Bracha's work as a language designer and implementer spans Strongtalk and the Animorphic VM, the Java HotSpot VM, and more recently Dart at Google as well as NewSpeak.

SPLASH'16 - ACM Conference on Systems, Programming, Languages, and Applications: Software for Humanity

     The ACM SIGPLAN conference on Systems, Programming, Languages and Applications: Software for Humanity (SPLASH) embraces all aspects of software construction and delivery to make it the premier conference at the intersection of programming, languages, and software engineering. SPLASH 2016 will take place from Sunday, October 30 to Friday, November 4, 2016 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

New Release of VA Smalltalk Coming Soon

     The VAST engineering team has been working hard and plans an update release of VA Smalltalk during Q4 of this year. Check out John O'Keefe's ESUG Product Update and Roadmap presentation above for details. When the new release (V8.6.3) is ready to go we'll send out another bulletin to let you know. Remember, if you have a current support agreement the upgrade is free! 

     If you're not on support please contact our Sales department ([hidden email]) and they'll help you get set up to take advantage of all the modernized and updated features of VA Smalltalk.
