I am neither a mentor nor a student .... but if I would have had to opportunity to put my teeth into something .... I would put my hand up for the following 5 (I really had to stop somewhere) projects.
1 -> 32. Seaside tools - Julian Fitzell/Gerhard Obermann 2 -> 7. Web application to create custom Smalltalk images and Virtual Machines - Dale Henrichs 3 -> 9. Extensible but fast code and text editor - Lukas Renggli 4 -> 12. Generate UML diagrams from Smalltalk code for Pharo - Stéphane Ducasse 5 -> 2. Cross-Platform Namespaces - James Foster/John O'Keefe I guess it depends too on the number of candidate students, but what is the process to decide how many and which projects will be selected? |
Hi Geert,
I propose you to become a second mentor of one of projects (without second mentor yet) and that way you'll be able to participate on this GSoC effort. Ask a main mentor for a second mentorship, then simply register on our website: http://gsoc2010.esug.org/register ..find that project and put yourself as second mentor there. Currently we need to get students in, that is promotote promote promote on universites... Projects go through mentor voting and somewhere in the middle of voting we get the final number of slots, that is how many projects will really be funded. See you therefore among the mentors! Alexandre: can you use the one I sent?
http://n4.nabble.com/GSoC-Call-for-students-td1680545.html#a1680545 The money is 4500 USD divided in two parts for the student and 500 USD for the mentor. The idea you said few days ago will probably be implemented: do a public poll to see which projects the community find more interesting.
This will help mentors to decide, but anyway, those are who take the decisions. Cheers Mariano On Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 3:48 PM, Geert Claes <[hidden email]> wrote:

Google provides 5500 USD per accepted student, 5000 USD for the student and 500 USD for the mentoring organization ... see http://socghop.appspot.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2010/faqs#administrivia |
