To the members of the GemStone Smalltalk Customer Forum,
We were recently informed that Lyris is decommissioning the machine that has for many years hosted the GemStone Customer Forum (I don't have the details on this). This prompted an investigation of alternatives for GemStone Customer communication.
As you may have heard (!), GemStone Systems, Inc., was purchased by VMware last year. The transition so far has been quite smooth and has had very little impact on the Smalltalk team (other than, as Norm has said, new Powerpoint templates!). Some of the behind-the-scenes changes have included access to additional infrastructure and other resources, all of which is helpful.
After some discussion about the Customer Forum, we agreed to use a mailman list managed by VMware's corporate IT. For the most part this is fine, but (surprisingly) VMware does not have an externally visible portal to manage subscriptions.
Thus, this is to inform you that the Lyris service will soon not be available and that existing users have been automatically added to the new mailman list. You can manage your subscription using email commands (as described on the initial welcome message and on the monthly reminders), but not the web link included in the welcome email. (On another list we specifically asked that there be no automatic welcome message so we could provide a more accurate one, but that didn't happen in this case--hence the confusion).
I've sent this email to both lists, so you should receive it twice. If you only got it once, check to see where it came from. Note also that this is a mailing list. This means that if you click 'Reply', your message will go to everyone on the list, not directly to me. Also, please do not 'Reply All' since that will just give everyone two copies of your message.
