Growl setting name

CyrilFerlicot
Apparently "Growl" is the name of Mac notification. But me, that never
used Mac, I don't know that. I think I am not the only one in that case.

If it's not just my ignorance, I propose to rename "Growl" as "Popup
dialog" or "Popup" or "Popup dialog/Growl".

What do you thing guys ?
If you think as me I will open an issue.

Hi

I think it should not be named “dialog” and “popup” is too generic.

How about “PopupInfo”?

Since Morph will be replace by Bloc I don't know if it's wise to name

The underlying class and implementation relies on Morph and since it is also a subclass of Morph, should end with the Morph postfix.
Had the implementation used Bloc or similar I would expect it to be named ...Bloc or ...Brick to signal this.

Henrik

I clearly would use Notification as part of the name, and not Growl.
NotificationPopup?

So if you want to change (and some tools should not hardcode access to
GrowlMorph)
a better name would be NotifierPopup

Personally I dont see the point of a rename, we got like 30% of people coming from macos that will be familiar with the name Growl, 0% that will be familiar with any other name. So you take a name that is very popular and change it to something none knows, how is that an improvement ?

What notification morph, or notification popup even means ? Is it a window ? is it a right click menu popup ?

Only the time having to port everything to the new name does not make it worth it.

also, afaik, migrating to bloc will not make morphs disappear… they will just change its internal logic (in the examples I’ve seen, there
are still things named “Morph”… they are just decomposed internally… but I don’t know).

Re: Growl setting name

kilon.alios
There are  A TON of things named Morphs inside Bloc.

Bloc has no choice because it wants to be 100% compatible with Morphic. That means it has to offer a 100% Morphic API . What Bloc does is rework the ugly internals of Morphic offering a better implementation and of course adds a lot of new functionality and integrates Athens.

Morphic is here to stay for a long time, at least until people migrate completely to Bloc and Bloc finally decides to drop Morphic support. I dont see that happening before Pharo 8-10.

Growl can be downloaded on Windows but almost no Windows user know this
name and can understand what it means.

I don't want to rename Growl, just to change the name of the setting.
The setting should not depend of the implementation of the notification
system. We can name the setting "Notifier Popup" and behind use a
GrowlMorph, a NotifierBloc, a PopupBrick… The common developer doesn't
care. When we want to use a Growl we just call #inform:, not #growl: or
"Growl new inform:".

As you said 30% of people can understand what Growl is about.
Almost everyone can understand that "Notifier Popup" is about a little
popup that give us informations.

Should we ignore the 70% of people that don't use mac ? And when Pharo
will be use by more industry than search lab there will be less than 30%
of mac I think. If the community don't want to rename this setting it's
your choice, but that will be 70% of newcomers that will be frustrating
when they will try to customize the appearance of there Pharo.
