Hello! My name is Göran Krampe and I am a long time Smalltalker, started out with VW in the mid 1990s, used VA for one customer and also used GemStone quite a lot for another, Dolphin also for another smallish project. Pretty early on I got heavily involved in Squeak and while I haven't been as involved in the core Pharo team I still support any and all open source Smalltalks. Since a year back I am working with Ron Teitelbaum at 3DICC.com - a product company around an advanced 3D collaborative "virtual reality" environment called Terf. Many of you recognize it under the "Teleplace" name, which in turn was born as "Croquet". 3DICC is best described as the successor of Teleplace - the company that first commercialized Croquet. Ron worked at Teleplace together with Andreas Raab and many other very talented Smalltalkers. I helped Teleplace a bit in 2010 and later when Teleplace folded (it did quite ok but VC lost patience) Ron started 3DICC and I joined up a bit later. The history of this technology is fairly complicated but suffice it to say that currently there are various derivatives of the original Croquet work, the OpenQwaq release (which basically was the current version of Teleplace before they folded) which we support and then our commercial offering Terf which could be described as a "highly improved OpenQwaq". 3DICC has also acquired all intellectual property from Teleplace, so all the improvements that was brewing at Teleplace we are gradually forward merging into Terf. Terf is currently based on Squeak 4.1 and the latest Cog VM. There are both Windows and OSX clients and the server parts run on Linux. We have begun moving towards using the Pharo VM build setup for the clients, but the Smalltalk codebase will probably stay on Squeak for the foreseable future, the porting effort would be HUGE and with no obvious benefits. And we are also using Pharo 2.0 for an internal tool. regards, Göran _______________________________________________ Pharo-business mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.pharo.org/mailman/listinfo/pharo-business_lists.pharo.org |
Hi Göran! Thanks for sharing all these interesting stuff about Teleplace and its continuation, I was completely unaware of the last part of the history.
It's very encouraging to know that more commercial projects are carried out using open source Smalltalk's. 2014-03-05 17:40 GMT-03:00 Göran Krampe <[hidden email]>:
