Is Pharo Launcher Ready?

Sean P. DeNigris
Administrator
IIUC we are planning on making Pharo Launcher the default download. Right now, our installation options are a bit scattered. The Ubuntu package installs Launcher, and the Mac and Windows buttons at http://pharo.org/download download image+VM zip files. Should we change the ppa to install an image+VM? Or should we change the Mac/Windows buttons to download Launcher installers? A possible reservation about the second option is that there was a recent report on this list of failed installation on Windows 8. Was that ever investigated?

Once we converge on one process, I will update the other GNU/Linux distro instructions to mirror that.
Cheers,
Sean

Yes, but not for Pharo4.

Then I think for now we should change the ppa to install an image+VM like the rest.

In my opinion, though maintaining a uniformity would be great , but leaving the ppa to install launcher in Ubuntu would be just fine rather than VM + Image.
Thanks

We should keep the PPA like it is with Launcher. We unify in Pharo 5 by changing the
others.

Never mind. I just realized that there seems to be a ppa for the vm and another for Launcher.

Not sure whether this is the right thread or not...

Keep in mind that the last time I tried to use the Pharo Launcher (a
couple of months ago) on ubunutu12.04 the Ubuntu packaged failed to be
found and I had to abandon my use of Pharo Launcher since Ubuntu12.04 is
still in common use ... my desktop at work, travis-ci (the big problem
for me) and elsewhere ... currently the downloads (outside of those that
depend upon the Ubuntu package) work just fine on ubuntu12.04 (and of
course Pharo runs just fine on ubuntu12.04), but if the "default
download" starts using the Pharo Launcher then those of working on
ubuntu12.04 will be forced to find alternate solutions to downloading
Pharo ...

If "default download" is scoped to the be only the newer versions of
Pharo, like 4.0 or 5.0, then it would be fair to exclude Ubuntu12.04
from the very convenient download scripts ... otherwise I'd like to know
right now so I can take defensive actions...like rewriting all of my
download scripts to use a safe mechanism based on ftp:)

I'm going to have to touch those scripts anyway, because the vmLatest
url just stopped working one day last week, but I'd really not like to
have to rewrite my pharo download scripts every 2 months:), so if there
are plans to summarily drop download support for Ubuntu12.04 in the near
future, then I'd rather know about that before I touch my scripts:)

Which ppa you are talking about. Please just don't touch the pharo-vm-core package :)

By "download" ... I am referring to the zero conf downloads ... if zero
conf downloads are not going to be impacted (again), then "never mind":)

Again, I didn't realize there were multiple packages. I thought the ppa /always/ installed the Launcher. Disregard.

I think Ubuntu 12.04 is supported now. See

Re: Is Pharo Launcher Ready?

Thanks Damien, I will give it a go when I get a chance ... because it
broke about 2 months ago and my mail to this list went unanswered, I've
since removed it from my scripts (in an emergency no less, because the
scripts were failing) and I have become a bit gunshy about relying on
something that drops from support without warning .... Believe me I did
not want to learn about `ldd` and the 12.04 pharo dependencies, but I
had no choice:(

I would like to be able to depend upon the zero conf scripts, because
they are very convenient, but I am still hazy on the policy towards
older releases and zero conf.

It would be very convenient if the scripts worked "forever" for the old
releases (pharo3.0 will be old in a year:) they don't need to be kept up
to date with respect to the latest vm, but should be frozen at the last
stable vm for that platform/release ... if that were true then I would
be comfortable leaning heavily on zero conf for the installation/update
scripts...if not...

If I recall correctly, dependencies had been broken for a few days and
if one installed one of the packages during that time, a purge and
reinstall was necessary (and I posted the commands to the list).

Best regards,

Yes I agree with you.
now we have reached a stable point where we can avoid to have latest
vm creeping in old scripts.
If I understood correctly what esteban told me.
