It would be good to be able to access in a TreeModel
- selected root
- unselected root
- access to the children of a root and see their status

The idea was to be able to ask from a TreeModel:
- the selected root
- the open root (open = showing its children) (see open ~= selected)
- possibility of closing open roots (my case: i am looking to assure that  
only one root is open at one time)
- access to the status of the children of a root (in my case, I have  
checkboxes as children and I would like to know which of the checkboxes are  
selected).

if ben enhances it fast why not in 2.0 because this is really important

I think even though we want this, it is not a show stopping bug for 2.0
(the world will not stop to turn if this is postponed to 3.0)
