I am trying to launch vwlinuxx86_64 on a linux 64 bit machine using the launchpad; vw projects window appears and I can successfully create a project (in the appropriate vw project directory); however, the project window then freezes and I am unable to launch and run the image file created. Is this a bug? Am I doing this wrong? Please help!

This is possibly a problem with 64-bit stability on recent linux versions. There was a thread on this list recently about this issue: Subject "[VW 7.7.1 64 bits] Memory access violations on Ubuntu Linux 11.10" (e.g.
http://www.parcplace.net/list/vwnc-archive/1111/msg00026.html). The short story is that the 64-bit Linux version is basically unusable on newer Linux versions. Unfortunately this requires fairly extensive change in the VM so the fix may not be available before 7.9 comes out. You may have to stick with the 32-bit version for now.
HTH,
Martin
