Is it possible to run GS/SS on a system with limited memory (say ... 512MB) strictly for development? Obviously that would be a problem for any actual workload but I was wondering if it could be dialed back to run in that mode while it's just me hitting it.
Yes, no problem at all. A 256MB slicehost works fine for development. As long as it runs a 64-bit OS.

On the even cheaper front, I do all my development in a virtual machine running locally with vmware.
I setup dns on the vm to route everything back at the vm to handle any requested and use the vm are its own private little internet.
Works very well for me.

And a 512MB Linode node costs the same, go Linode.
I run a dev VM (vmware) on a Mac with 1.8gb allocated. Lower than that
I was getting too much swapping on long running processes and running
few other things, like Firefox.
