I want to programmatically load Searchlight from the Public Store
Database. I could write a script that carefully loads the packages
bottom-up (prerequisite-wise), to avoid any dialog asking for which
version of prerequisites to load. But there are other methods which
could ease this task:
1 Create a bundle which refers stable package versions (configuration)
of the tools. Perhaps even with information about the VisualWorks
version supported.
2 Hard-code the prerequisites to point to versions of packages.
When trying to load Searchlight you probably want to load tool support
but there are two packages (“Searchlight-Tools” and
“SearchlightTools”). Which one should the poor developer pick?
Probably the newest one… probably… This confusion, together with the
lack of a “stable” release, means I am less tempted to introduce
Searchlight in our project.
I know that adoption of both Searchlight and SUnitToo, was stopped
early in our project, just because people got mad when trying to load
the tools.
Please do not take this as a criticism. I really appreciate the work,
and know this is “free” software and that I cannot expect others to
fix my problems. I just try to point to an issue which is common in
the Public Store Database, and when fixed could increase the use of
many projects.
Kind regards
Runar
