MS SQL as Store backend

Charles Adams
I've tried to get an answer to this, but can wait no longer.

When using MS SQL as a Store backend, two databases are created: NEWBERN1 and NEWBERN2. Spreading our data across two databases would seem to me to present a synchronization problem when backing up. How do I know that the two databases are in sync and can be backed up without fear of corruption?

Also, why two databases? We have one database in Postgres. This doesn't make sense.
