Markdown or Textile rendering?

has anyone had any luck with rendering textile or markdown?

i have used pier markdown.. and that would work too, but i don't know if
i can use that outside the pier environment..

Yes, you can. Damien did a marvelous job ripping out the pier document model into its own package. It is called pillar. You can find informations here:
