Maybe a stupid question.

Simply put: Does Gemstone work on some BSD Unix? (FreeBSD, OpenBSD,
NETBSD) or whatever?

Darwin (aka OS X) is a BSD and GemStone works there.
But that is probably not your question ;)

    a Darwin OS.
