Re: NDA in pdf

Niall Ross
Dear James and Maarten,
IIUC, the licence James' pointed you at applies to the
non-commercial edition, not the download edition.

The VW 7.8 edition that is downloadable from the website - called the
download version to distinguish it from non-commercial editions of VW -
comes with a different licence. The text is in the product and also here.

http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/main/ip/downloadtandc.html

The main difference, AFAICT, is that, for the basic license, you should
not pass on the download edition to anyone, instead send them to the
website to download it themselves.  The intent is evidently to have a
full record of who has downloaded.  (The extended license offers
exceptions to those who are in the Cincom academic programme or similar.)

HTH
                Yours faithfully
                        Niall Ross

Well, to the outside person sitting in front of a monitor, the license on the website is the license - if it's not, why on earth is it there at all?

As to not "passing the download on", that's just silly.  If that's the case, then there should never be CD's handed out at trade shows.

Re: NDA in pdf

Steven Kelly
In reply to this post by jarober
The question was about the NDA for the vw-dev program, not the license
for the normal "vwnc" download / trade fair CDs. Maybe Maarten just
posted to the wrong list by mistake.

Alan posted the vw-dev NDA PDF to the vw-dev list 4th Aug 19:52 UTC, so
I'm not quite sure what Maarten's mention of Sribd (Scribd?) refers to.

Re: NDA in pdf

Alan Knight-2
On the cincomsmalltalk web site for many PDF documents it links to scribd, which lets you view them quickly page by page, search without downloading the whole thing, and so forth, but which obnoxiously requires a membership in order to actually let you download or print them. We normally also have a link to just download the full PDF, but that doesn't seem to be the case for the vw-dev NDA. I've passed that along to the appropriate people, so it should get fixed. For a short document like that, the benefit something like scribd provides is awfully low.

Re: NDA in pdf

Maarten Mostert-2
Dear Alan,

Well when this person is at it, please let him now that I did find another NDA for the dev list over here:   http://parcplace.net/enroll-nda.html
It is different from the scribed one, but if it is ok to sign this one I'll do that.

As I was cleaning up things anyway please notice that I didn't find the place where to get a subscription to the NC list, neither to unsubscribe (I just wanted to swap mail addresses).  Should be a good thing that the list is easily accessible from the main website.

Regards,

@+Maarten,

PS; Nial, Did you actually roll out the Orange Carpet for VW 7.8 ? ?

Re: NDA in pdf

Alan Knight-2
No, I would not expect our legal department to consider it OK to sign an old version of the NDA. I'd hope that our web person would make that available for download soon, but in the meantime I can send you a copy.

The VWNC list is actually not maintained by Cincom, and while it would be good if our web site explained about it, the information can be found on the Wiki at http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/CincomSmalltalkWiki/VisualWorks+Online+Communities

Dear James and Maarten,
IIUC, the licence James' pointed you at applies to the non-
commercial edition, not the download edition.
The VW 7.8 edition that is downloadable from the website - called
the
download version to distinguish it from non-commercial editions of VW
-
comes with a different licence. The text is in the product and also
here.
http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/main/ip/downloadtandc.html

The main difference, AFAICT, is that, for the basic license, you
should not pass on the download edition to anyone, instead send them
to
the website to download it themselves. The intent is evidently to
have
a full record of who has downloaded. (The extended license offers
exceptions to those who are in the Cincom academic programme or
similar.)

Dear Maarten,

vwnc is not a mailing list controlled by Cincom. You’ll find subscribe/unsubscribe information here: http://lists.cs.uiuc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vwnc

or use the mail API by sending an email with the subject “subscribe”, “unsubscribe” or “help” to [hidden email]

On the cincomsmalltalk web site for many PDF documents it links to scribd, which lets you view them quickly page by page, search without downloading the whole thing, and so forth, but which obnoxiously requires a membership in order to actually let you download or print them. We normally also have a link to just download the full PDF, but that doesn't seem to be the case for the vw-dev NDA. I've passed that along to the appropriate people, so it should get fixed. For a short document like that, the benefit something like scribd provides is awfully low.
