Hello,

I tried to start the Context image, but failed.

What I've done is:

git clone 'https://github.com/ccrraaiigg/context.git'
context/context.app/Contents/RUNME/linux/context.sh

The output is:

START /usr/bin/firefox "http://localhost:8090/README.html"

(process:8349): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion

A new browser tab shows up with the address:
"http://localhost:8090/README.html", but no page appears (the "cannot
connect" error page).

Also the program stops after showing the lines above.

Am I doing anything wrong? Thank you for any help.
Hi all--

We did it! Today, on James Robertson’s birthday, David Buck and I
have released episode one of “Smalltalk Reflections”, a podcast about
Smalltalk. Our first episode is a tribute to James, who started the
previous incarnation of the show. It’s hosted by David and myself, and
features remembrances from several friends and co-workers, as well as a
few choice words from the man himself. I edited it, and wrote the theme
music. Enjoy!
> Have you tried dropping any of your Spoon images into Bert's SqueakJS

It is! Yes, there's a bit of VM support required (at least for
remote messaging, and ideally also for method imprinting and unused
method removal), but it's not hard.

Yes, I'm excited to do this.

Have you tried dropping any of your Spoon images into Bert's SqueakJS page?
Is this feasible? IIUC, there would be some VM support necessary to make
it work, but the SqueakJS VM is by far the most generic runtime environment
available today. If various images could be grown from a minimal Spoon seed
within the SqueakJS environment, I have to think that this would be a remarkable

Yeah! And Alan Lovejoy and I are getting toward a Squeak-based
browser for his .NET-based Smalltalk, Essence#. The first project I want
to use it for is the ability to make snapshots at all. :)

caution: filename not matched: Spoon 3 beta
before, and this time it didn't crash. I was able to refresh the
page. Clicking on "development environment" brought me to a totally

Congratulations on beta 5. I tried it on Ubuntu. FYI, I got a couple

Clicking on anything told me the standard "Oops! Google Chrome could
expose the background terminal window, I found the following.
Hi Colin--

> What's the state of the art in shrinking these days?
>
> I'm starting a new web project with Squeak, and I want to create a
> smallish base image that I can use to build up images for development
> and deployment. It doesn't have to be absolutely minimal, just
> unloading unnecessary code and cleaning up the registries, clearing
> caches etc would fine.
>
> I tried "Smalltalk shrinkAndCleanDesktop", but it complains about
> obsolete behaviours still being present, so I guess there's some bit
> rot there.
>
> Suggestions?

I think the best way to shrink is for the garbage collector to do
it. There's an alternate version of the GC in Spoon[1], invoked with
Interpreter>>primitiveSnapshotWithoutStaleMethods. It sets a mark bit on
all the methods associated with contexts in extant processes, along with
any other methods which have run (for example, by running unit tests).
Then it treats all other methods as garbage in the pre-snapshot GC.

This leads to a chain reaction; the methods that aren't marked are
usually the only things referring to their literals (including classes).
The process is immediate, and requires no knowledge of what's being
thrown away. The only difference between producing a minimal system
(currently 1kB) and a larger one (e.g., the Spoon development base
system at 300 kB) is how many methods you mark in advance by running them.

15188004/spoon/Spoon-3-alpha-4.zip dropbox gives 404, and I can't seem to

Hi--
I've released Spoon 3 alpha 4, just to fix some VM problems with
3a3. It's at:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/15188004/spoon/Spoon-3-alpha-4.zip
Please fire it up and let me know that it starts. I've tried it myself on:
- Mac OS X 10.7 (Mountain Lion)
- Ubuntu GNU/Linux 12.04 64-bit
- Ubuntu GNU/Linux 12.04 32-bit
- Windows XP SP3
- Windows 8
thanks!

I have it blitting and receiving mouse and keyboard events.

I'm still getting extremely strange floating point behavior (although
it may very well be more general). My vm is getting the receiver
argument order wrong on the stack. This is leading to divide by zeros.
Is there any obvious way of debugging this? I am moving to the VM list
after this question, but I wanted to make sure I haven't forgotten
something obvious.

No, not in any way that would affect debugging. It has a dispatch

I realise you're semi-keeping a lid on this, but the folks on the
vm-dev mailing list [1], while probably not terribly knowledgeable
about Plan 9 in particular, do collectively have a whole lot of
experience debugging the VMs on multiple platforms (including esoteric
ones like RISC OS).

I'm also getting an interesting floating point behavior.

I'm getting a float division of 1023.0/0.0. This should be caught be
the test !(arg != 0.0) but it isn't. Until I understand the problem
better I'll blame the plan9 compilers. I've gotten the expected
due to some bit of initialization I'm not doing.
