What was "1.5mb ish"? Your later post came up with the number 3,385kb. I like the first number better. ;-)

My guess: Michael remember the 3MB size, and thought it had been the uncompressed size.
My daydream: Michael ran the image through imagecompress.exe once, giving 3MB, and a second time, giving 1.5MB :-)
That would have been my guess too but I prefer to be wrong in this case, so I asked just in case. ;-)
