Poor window icons

Terry Raymond
Hi

I am having difficulty with poor window icons. I import
a png file and convert it to an icon. I made sure the image
was first cleaned. I have also made sure the image was limited
to 64x64 and depth of 8 bits.

If I display the icon as an opaque image it looks fine. But,
when I install it as a window icon, under Win XP, it looks
like the mask is offset or rotated, so I see black where the
background should be.

Does anyone know what is going on here?

This is on VW 7.6.

Thanks.

Terry

Windows is sensitive to sizes and color depths for icons, if they don't
match the display *and* the icon measurements in place (which change
from Windows to Windows), then Windows will smash the icon any which way
to make it fit.

Newer VMs adjust icons better if they don't match what Windows expects,
and so they look much better.  In fact, you can tell whether you have a
modern enough VM by looking closely at the default window icons.  More
modern ones do not have black pixels on the window icon.  Older ones
show issues like you describe.  So, to make the story short, use newer
VMs.  A 7.7.1 VM should be enough, IIRC.
