Problem following getting started guide

Hello Group,
I was following the "getting started guide" and after I ran "amber serve", I opened the webbrowser and got greeted with:

"This is a sample app. It contains some batteries included and should be cleaned up once you start developing your own app / lib."

Did I miss a step? I was expecting to be able to open the IDE by that point.

Still an issue? Tried to reload / generate again / try different browser if your actual one has problems?

A lightbox allowing you to open IDE(s) should appear automatically.

I gave up trying....
Was excited about amber and smalltalk but it seems the project is not actively maintained anymore
Am I correct?

Gave it another try after I uninstalled everything.....
This is what I get when I try to install amber-cli

with that, I cannot start a new project with amber.

Any Idea?

You should not follow startup guide (docs are in bad shape, there are little resources to keep them current).

Correct up to date instructions are always in git README (lolg.it/amber/amber).

Maybe that was the problem from the start.

Git README says clearly to install other side-deps along amber-cli.

Well you seem to have bad luck, as it works fine for me (tried today with both bower and npm caches purged) as well as others it seems (no one reports this error).

Did you run amber init in empty directory? Wasn't there any error during it running (maybe if the last step failed require is not mapped)?

You may try to run

npm install
bower install
grunt devel

in a project directory to try to replicate what amber init should have done.

That make me really puzzled.
How can deploy.js not be present when amdconfig succeeded?

You have really strange thing there.

`amber init` does grunt-init to initialize the project, then npm install, bower install, grunt and grunt devel.

Of course, grunt-init fails if it is not in empty directory. Or it may have failed for different reasons, leaving the skeletion in half-finished state. Then, even bower install, npm install, grunt and grunt devel do not help.

OTOH, if skeleton is generated well, those should help.

This outcome of yours is really strange, though.

You should just repeat all t
he thing from the beginning (npm -g install ...., make _empty_ dir, go there, amber init and log the console all the way so I can understand what is wrong here.

It must have failed somewhere in the process of generating the project, I'd say.

Ah. Something wrong's here.

Compare
/home/bond/smalltalk/node_modules/grunt-contrib-requirejs/node_modules/requirejs/bin/r.js:29929:9
and
/home/bond/smalltalk/amber/deploy.js

The prefixes should be the same, but they are not. It seems npm install was run in smalltalk directory, but project seems to be in amber directory.

That looks like pretty failed setup.

What are directiories /home/bond/smalltalk/ and /home/bond/smalltalk/amber/ for?

Only one should be root of your project. Involvement of the other one is incorrect, either way.

It seems the clearest way would be indeed to reinstall global part though npm -g install, and running amber init in a clean directory that is aimed to contain the project.

You *might* find PharoJS a better fit for you, but our documentation is in even worse shape. We also (like amber-lang) have a Slack channel which we monitor pretty well, and are usually quick to respond to questions - email me if you want to connect.
