Yesterday somebody has published the HotDraw packages and the
Collections bundle to the Cincom public repository using the guest account. That wouldn't be too bad if the Collections bundle had a reasonable version name indicating from what VisualWorks version it has been published, and if it contains any changes from the VW distribution. Unfortunately, whoever published it chose to name it "1.0". This will be confusing for people who are not very familiar with VW and Store, who might assume that this is an official release from Cincom. These bundles and packages should be deleted from the repository or at the very least marked as broken. I don't intend to blame the person who published the two bundles. For beginners, it's maybe not obvious that the guest account for the public repository which is configured in the base image is not meant for everybody's daily work, and that one should install a local Store repository for that purpose. Is it reasonable to give guest accounts write permission? With named accounts, the maintainers of the repository can at least contact the people who do non-standard things in the repository. Revoking write permissions from the guest account would be a safeguard against this kind of misunderstanding. Best regards, Joachim Geidel |
Earlier, it was not possible to publish as guest. Perhaps that setting
got lost when moving to the new server for the public store? I'd agree that we shouldn't allow anonymous publishing, and that setting should be reinstated as soon as possible. I'd actually prefer it if there was some better way to identify people, e.g. via an email address. Having nicknames is OK if there is a way to send messages within the system, but Store doesn't support that. There are currently 397 users who have published in the public Store, so we can hardly claim we all know each other anyway! I also think that the public repository should not be
used for class projects as they don't have general application. I think it would be nice for Cincom to provide a repository to make it easier for class projects, but I don't think they should be mixed with packages intended for general use. The guest account shouldn't have had publish permissions.
The table permissions were lost when we moved over to the new database.
This should be fixed now.
