Query about Seaside Hosting

Rajeev Lochan
Dear All,
I am interested in hosting an Innovative Web App, which is some sort of Social Networking Site(Dynamic). I am almost done with the image now and looking for Hosts. I already have an account with www.webfaction.com . They offer hosting for Plone, Jhoomla, RoR, etc. I requested them to have Seaside as well in their technologies offered list and the below were the Conversation we had over mail.

Mail from WebFaction Team "
I just spent roughly twenty minutes searching
Google for information
about
Seaside and it's requirements and I found very little information on
the
subject. It looks like we might be able to support Seaside through
VisualWorks now but the documentation link on the VisualWorks website
links to a non existent PDF.

If you can tell us more about Seaside, such as:

Its ideal production environment.
Its requirements. (Memory, CPU, etcetera.)

We'll look into it. :)

Regards,

-David Sissitka "

My Reply to them "
Dear David and Team,
I agree that as of now, it is quite difficult to search for resources on Seaside. I shall help you to a certain extent on where you can find details about hosting Seaside.

There is a blog by one Ramon Leon http://onsmalltalk.com He has blogged a lot on Seaside. Some specific blogs related to hosting are :

a)http://onsmalltalk.com/programming/smalltalk/running-seaside-apache-and-iis-on-windowsxp/

b)http://onsmalltalk.com/programming/smalltalk/seaside/my-journey-to-linux/

c)http://onsmalltalk.com/programming/smalltalk/scaling-seaside-redux-enter-the-penguin/

d)http://onsmalltalk.com/programming/smalltalk/running-squeak-as-a-service/

e)http://onsmalltalk.com/programming/smalltalk/a-bit-on-seaside-configuration/

f)http://onsmalltalk.com/programming/smalltalk/seaside/scaling-seaside/

You may find more of it there.

The above list is some of the things I thought would be helpful to you. Squeak (a dialect of Smalltalk) www.squeak.org is an Open Source Project and is for free whereas VisualWorks SmallTalk has licensed and free versions.
The people at seasidehosting.st are only giving hosting services for Squeak images and not for VisualWorks.

There is also a blog which compares Seaside and RoR.
http://onsmalltalk.com/programming/smalltalk/rails-vs-seaside/

As of now, the only players into Seaside hosting(AFAIK) are

a)www.seasidehosting.st (A free hosting place for non-commercial web apps of seaside)- sponsored by netstyle.ch and ESUG (European Smalltalk User Group)

b)netstyle.ch (Situated in Switzerland, its a startup by some of the members of core-development team of Seaside and Squeak)

c)www.seasideparasol.com (Canada., not entertaining new clients and the resources offered looks very low as demanded by Seaside)

Rajeev Lochan

I am awaiting for their reply. In the meanwhile, I would be happy if Ramon or others can blog/write about Seaside Hosting, keeping Webhosts such as webfaction in mind.

I could help you out with some servers I offer for free or commercial Seaside hosting.
As it is impolite to discuss this on the list I will reply off list.

Anybody else interested in a free hosting of seaside apps is welcome as well to email me direct.

In reply to this post by Rajeev Lochan
I use Webfaction as my hosting provider currently. I have gotten good
service from them. But as of yet I have deployed any website on their
system.

I will put in a vote with them for Squeak/Seaside/Pier support.
(While paused in the writing of this email, I just went in and wrote an
email to them requesting support. :)

I had been planning on hopefully deploying a Seaside image on Webfaction
at some point in the future.

I don't know that one necessarily needs explicit support from Webfaction
for Seaside other than them pointing the correct ports to the image you
have running. But support would be nice.

This is an area where I think that Squeak/Seaside/Pier can start to move
into the Zope/Plone area. When Seaside/Pier start approaching a modest
out-of-the-box experience when compared to Zope/Plone, then I think it
will be a good sell to hosting providers. The memory footprint for
Seaside/Pier is much nicer than Zope/Plone.

To use Plone on Webfaction I have to bump my plan up to the 120mb memory
plan. I think we can in the future do Pier on the 40mb plan, and should
be able to on the 80 now. Of course all this depends on the website
deployed and its data in the image.

For now I think it would be nice if we could provide a quality, cleaned
up download and deploy image for Squeak/Seaside/Pier. Possibly one that
could be started up by the hosting provider in their web gui admin setup
and you upload and/or point the image too your Monticello repository to
load your website. And your off and running.

I would love over time to have a lean deployment image and a rich
development image. Allowing Monticello to be the bridge between them.

I don't know that we will ever compete in the PHP type of hosting
services. But I believe that we can improve our story and compete well
with the Django, Rails, Zope/Plone, arena of hosting services.

Re: Query about Seaside Hosting

Thanks Jimmie for voting for Seaside Inclusion on Webfaction. It is indeed possible to upload Seaside (AFAIK) on webfaction as a Custom Application Listening to a Port) and make Seaside Image to listen to a port. It would be good enough for a simple application.

Since I am expecting my application to be some sort of Social Networking Site, it shall probably need much more pampering than a single image. I am exploring other opportunities here.

As you mentioned, if webhosts can support Plone/Zope, they shall be having enough room for Seaside/Pier . The seaside community should also look in this direction. We should also have some provision to keep saving the images now and then.

Regards,
Rajeev
