This is internal bug 40842 ... the bug has been fixed in GemStone 3.0

It's worth noting here, that Johan set GEM_TEMPOBJ_POMGEN_PRUNE_ON_VOTE=90;  
in his system.config file and hasn't seen unusual growth in repository size:
