Hey Lukas,
So far, this version feels less welcoming to me. I'm not saying it can't work (it sounds like you intend to do more on it) but the layout currently feels colder and I find it "disorienting" somehow, maybe because the regions aren't well defined and all the links are sort of different and going "back" is different in each case. I don't get any sense of "where I am" and the layout doesn't tell me, at a quick glance, what I should click on first. And I have to scroll both horizontally and vertically. Unless you object, I'm inclined to include version 6 in the RC for now until this concept gets further developed... I think the new version it is a significant improvement. Just compare it with the Rails or Django welcome screens. I find the previous version look very oldish with the large amount of messy contents, the boxes, the bars and the tiny fonts. I agree that the configuration interface is kind of ugly. Also, I doubt that any newbie will be able to understand without further help what 'Error Walkbacks' or 'Server URL' (I don't even understand it myself) means exactly. I think it is kind of pointless at the moment, unless further explanations are added. I think the new version it is a significant improvement. Just compare My 2c. Despite having a stake in the original version, I much prefer Lukas's version. _______________________________________________ seaside-dev mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/seaside-dev |

I get a sort of mini-panic feeling and my mind tries to focus on something else instead of solving the problem. Maybe something as simple as a stylized "1" and "2" to indicate you should look at the two sections in order might help. Maybe we should put it up on http://fivesecondtest.com/ Could we try a smaller font and a shorter header at least as a start? Currently I can only see about half the content without scrolling. It seems like "Seaside" is way more important than the content and that doesn't seem right to me. This isn't just confirmation that it's working but guidance towards next steps. And is having marked-out regions old-fashioned? I feel like the page lacks shape. What do you think makes this one work better then, Nick? What do you think makes this one work better then, Nick? Perhaps the difference is the scrolling. When I look at on my laptop I can see the complete introductory page. It seems logical that "New to Seaside" is where you start followed by the "Next Steps" links.
However looking at it at a lower resolution I can see that if you have to scroll, it's less clear what do to. What resolution are you using? Is there a general consensus that page layouts should work at a minimum of xxx resolution?
It would be a shame to remove too much white space as I think that gives it a "less is more" clean look. However, I'm not sure about "Welcome at the Seaside". Wouldn't "Welcome to Seaside" read more easily? Also it's a shame to loose the examples with the explanation; though I realise my syntax highlighted Seaside code, would probably be enough to put most people off using Seaside HTML syntax.
Hope this helps Nick _______________________________________________ seaside-dev mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/seaside-dev |
I'm using the standard MacBook Pro 17 resolution. My window is not
full width but is more or less full height. You didn't indicate what parts of this version you think work well... Even though it's less functional, to my eyes, it looks more impressive. _______________________________________________ seaside-dev mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/seaside-dev |
