Re: VisualWorks Project Manager (LaunchPad) doesn't work at all

T. Edwin King
Are you running OS X in 64-bit kernel mode?  If so, VW 7.7.x will not run
at all.  You'll have to boot into 32-bit kernel mode.

Todd Edwin King

No, I do not. And I have no problem running VW 7.7.1. Only the
launchpad does not work.

Re: VisualWorks Project Manager (LaunchPad) doesn't work at all

Sherry Michael
Hi Johannes,

I use the LaunchPad regularly on Mac OSX.  I'm assuming you are using the NC version of
VisualWorks, so are you perhaps using an early Release Candidate?  There was a very late change
affecting the LaunchPad only with the NC version, where we tried to clone the new project image
from image/visual.im when we should have been using visualnc.im as the base.  Your image should
report its date as "July 26, 2010".

When you look inside your project directory do you see an image in there, or is it just an empty
directory?  If there is no image in the project directory perhaps this is the cause of the
problem, especially since you are successfully running VW 7.7.1 otherwise.  If the image is there,
could you please provide some additional information?

- Where is VisualWorks 7.7.1 installed on your machine?
- Do you have any other versions of VisualWorks also installed on the machine?
- What is the contents of /Users/<userid>/Library/Preferences/com.cincom.vw7.7.1.plist
in particular the values for VISUALWORKS and VWPROJECTS, such as

        <key>VISUALWORKS</key>
        <string>/Users/smichael/Smalltalk/VW_Releases/vw7.7.1</string>
        <key>VWPROJECTS</key>
        <string>/Users/smichael/VisualWorks Projects</string>

Regards,
Sherry

but my VW is not installed on an external drive ...

/Applications/Entwicklung/Smalltalk/vw771nc
is the same location as
/Volumes/OSX/Applications/Entwicklung/Smalltalk/vw771nc
on my internal drive called OSX, whereby OSX is defined as link in
Volumes:
/Volumes

drwxrwxrwx   1 johannes  johannes  16384 31 Okt 19:33 WINDOWS/

The only thing I have done is to partition my hard drive into OSX and
WINDOWS (bootcamp partition)

No, I have some work directories (outside the VWNC directory
hierarchy) containing only .im resp. .cha files and maybe some
auxiliary files. I start VW always by double-clicking a .im file.

yes, I see exactly these values

yes, no problem, double-clicking the im file starts VW the usual way.

yes, the same problem: the launchpad starts but is not usable. Also I
cannot quit VisualWorks, I have to kill the process

thanks for your effort
