Yep. It would be great if someone familiar with Gemstone (I'm not)
could post a list of steps to download the necessary non-commercial/trial versions of VW and GS and install whatever's needed to try this out. It requires an unreleased version of the Gemstone VM to run (we had to make modifications to the VM to get continuations to work). It was premature for me to publish the branch, being new to Squeak/Monticello I had a sneaking suspicion that I'd press the 'wrong' button along the way:) We'll make an announcement to this list when all of the pieces are in place (including information about downloading non-commerce/trial versions). Our target date for having everything ready is Smalltalk Solutions 2007. If things continue to go smoothly, we are likely to be ready sooner. If any of you have questions, feel free to contact me directly. We'll do our best to ignore that branch in the repo in the meantime ;). Indeed, this is long overdue. I hope the installation process will be simple enough to attract people not familiar with gemstone, it should be possible to run the install, start the service and go browsing. Along the same lines it should come with a preconfigured image (VisualWorks and/or Squeak) which one could start and go poking around, not having to figure out what the syntax of gem service string is etc. _______________________________________________ Seaside mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/seaside |

Frankly, it is one of the reasons that we're spending more time on the
port. Not only do we want a clean installation process (your suggestions are well taken), but we want to have worked through a number of the issues involved in using Seaside on top of Gemstone (persistence, web server, and distributed image issues) before cutting it loose. Thanks for the feedback, Dale Boris Popov wrote: >Indeed, this is long overdue.
