For the non-NorthAm types, CS1 is the intro programming course in most Computer Science programs.
There is a survey currently running that was advertised through ACM SIGCSE, about CS1 courses. The survey does not include Smalltalk as a possible answer to the language of use, but that doesn't matter because nobody filled it in under "Other" either. Wow. That surprised me. The survey is still open, and only ~105 responses so far, but I'm still surprised.
