RE: Squeak Vision ~2000

JASON HOGUE

That document was published in 2001.

What is the CURRENT VISION for Squeak ?
What will Squeak/Pharo/Cuis/Open Cobalt look like in 1/2/3 years?
What are the "key" projects currently underway that will take Squeak forward?

I've been meaning to write this email for a few weeks now and Sean's email finally got me to do it.

After watching the current state of personal computing (desktop, hand held, cell ,etc) grow ever more closed and "into the cloud", I have become certain that MY computing future will NOT be on a mainstream platform. I have scoured the Internet for alternatives and they all seem like alot of the same (Haiku, ReactOS, Linux, etc). All great projects that will meet the needs of some users....but I want something more. The ONLY thing I found that could provide that "something more" was Squeak (and it's variations).

I have just started to really explore Squeak to see how I can utilize it in my daily endeavors. I have a lot to learn.

There are several aspects of Squeak that attract me;
Smalltalk - I can't program, but I'm willing to learn.
Morphic - So much more capable than MVC
Direct Manipulation - I know this is part of Morphic but I see it as THE KEY to a truly Next Generation system where users could Assemble simple solutions via Drag and Drop using pre-made "Components". A bit more fantasy than reality but Why not?
..and many other things too.

I urge the Squeak Board to create a Revised Squeak Vision.

WRT Morphic and direct user interface construction: this isn't fantasy. You can actually do this today, as it was one of the original drivers for the system when it was conceived in Self, as an evolution of Randall Smith's Smalltalk based Alternate Reality Toolkit (ARK.)

It can be a little harder to see it in Squeak, given that Smalltalk is very tool-centric and code-centric, but it's totally there. I didn't really quite realize what I could do with Morphic in Squeak until I checked out Self.
