The Weekly Squeak Summary No. 21: Feb 1, 2009 - Dec 26, 2010

Michael Haupt-3
Dear Squeakers,

welcome to this edition of The WeeklySqueakSummary, an irregular
traffic-dependent report on what's going on in the world of Squeak
based on the WeeklySqueak blog.

This time, almost a year has passed since the last edition. Why is
that? Things got off my mind a bit, which I apologise for, but also,
there hasn't been too much traffic on The Weekly Squeak: for a blog
with that name, 34 posts in 11 months are less than weekly.

And why is *that*?

However it may be: the Pratchett-style "I ATEN'T DEAD" sticker is not
yet required to make sure people don't get things wrong (there are
rumours ...), but couldn't the community do better in terms of
bringing developments to public attention? If you have an interesting
project that you are about to release, or if you want to convey
anything else of relevance, drop the news team a note via the contact
information available at http://news.squeak.org/write-us/.

Anyway!

Highlights of the past year (sigh):

People can rejoice in new releases of Squeak [8], Seaside [25], and
Etoys [27]. Documentation is enriched by another book on Seaside [3],
and a whole bunch of video tutorials [9]. Underlying technology is
advancing, with the Cog VM (Squeak on a JIT compiler!) [18], and the
(still experimental but very promising) RoarVM which makes Squeak
scale on multicores [30] (imagine those two getting married). Finally,
there is - among other things, but at last - a UI builder for Morphic
[32].

Two successful conferences have been held; Squeakfest at the
University of North Carolina [12], ESUG in Barcelona [26], and
Smalltalks in Buenos Aires [31]. Argentina seems to be steadily
developing into something like the hot plate of Smalltalk technology.

It looks like a successful year, doesn't it?
