Ugly text, VW 7.11 on MacOSX

I am running VW 7.11 on Mac OSX 10.8.5 and the text looks terrible, like someone anti-aliased at a much lower resolution and scaled the fuzzy characters up. Is this a known problem? Fix? I'll dig in if I have to but I'd rather write code.
