Greetings everyone,
I work as an Automation Engineer for a company in Belgium; our main business application was written in VisualWorks 3.1 over 10 years ago. For the last 2 years, I have been maintaining the source code and adding more modules. Now, one of our goals in the not so distant future will be to upgrade to a new Architecture (VisualWorks 7.8+?), mainly to update the UI and add support for Web services. I noticed on the website of Cincom that an International conference on SmallTalk will take place at the end of this month in Ghent, Belgium (basically, in my backyard :) Will anyone of you with experience in this subject be present at ESUG 2012? Maybe even someone from Cincom? I would like to talk to someone on how to handle a project like this and see if we can tackle this internally or if we need external help... Dear Peter, there will be plenty of Cincom people at ESUG. Cincom itself is offering support for such update projects. We are looking forward to help you! You might also want to look at:
- Google PortingAndGardening to find the (old) slides...
- see also p.22-27 in http://www.esug.org/data/ReportsFromNiallRoss/nfrStS2007andVendorReports.pdf
- Also here: http://youtu.be/8DciUS4_cQY. Video doesn't have enough resolution to show slides, and the file has been removed from the STIC site :(
You'd think given Smalltalk's long history Cincom and STIC would be a bit better at maintaining material, even things from as far back as 4 years ago...
