VA Smalltalk 9.0 64-bit Beta 2 is available

Seth Berman
Hello All,

We are pleased to announce the availability of VA Smalltalk 9.0 Beta 2!
http://www.instantiations.com/betaprogram/

Since starting the beta program, we have had wonderful participation and feedback.
I want to thank everyone who participated because they have done a fantastic job helping
us stress-test the vm and asking good questions.  This is going to ensure we have a solid release.

I'm doing this with a simple review of the changelog, but things are definitely stabling out.
Between Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 (@2months) - we fixed about 14 or so vm bugs
Between Alpha 2 and Beta 1 (@1 month) - we fixed another 14 or so vm bugs and optimized a lot.
Between Beta 1 and Beta 2 (@1 month) - we fixed 3 vm bugs.

And at this point, we are out of known vm bugs to fix.
We are still on the hunt, so please participate...we really value it.

Enjoy!

Hi Seth,

Is there a plan to make VA Smalltalk DPI aware? It seems to not be implemented in 9.0 Beta as of yesterday download.
It is problem on Windows 10. When VA window is moved from monitor with 100% DPI scale to one with 125%, its text become blurry.
It is caused by DPI virtualization triggered by missing implementation of DPI aware API.
It is reducing usability when multiple applications written for different resolutions are needed to run on the same computer.
Please see attached picture. Note sharply rendered DPI aware title bar, and blurred DPI virtualized (rendering every four pixels of application on five pixels of monitor) contents of the window.

Following link and its quoted text seems to be relevant to this issue:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dn469266(v=vs.85).aspx

"In Windows 8.1, if the user changes DPI without logging off or if the user moves the application to a monitor that has a different DPI, both system DPI–aware applications and applications that are not DPI-aware are scaled based on the change. You should update applications that are not per-monitor DPI–aware, including applications that are system DPI–aware, so that they use the new DPI APIs and window notification available in Windows 8.1 to respond to dynamic changes in DPI and avoid being virtualized and scaled. To override the effects of DPI virtualization, follow the guidance in the Assessing DPI Compatibility section. In addition, you should follow the testing guidelines in the Testing DPI Compatibility section to test that your application behaves as expected at the most common DPI configurations by using the testing guidelines in the Assessing DPI Compatibility section."

Have a nice day,

Re: VA Smalltalk 9.0 64-bit Beta 2 is available

Seth Berman
Hello Stan,

Yes, there is a development case for this already created because we also think it's important for the reasons you state, and you're not the first to request it.

V9.0 is operating on an abbreviated schedule, and it's the first time we've done a "all-hands-on-deck" situation where basically
every technical staff member is heavily involved in either virtual machine development or supporting 64-bit image development.

DPI-aware involves a lot of change, more than I originally would have guessed when I last looked, so that is a feature we are
looking to schedule for the release to follow 9.0.

Thank you for bringing it up, it's good to have the additional validation from users concerning the importance of these kinds of features.
