VM Crash LocaleTest>> beginning with Cog Spur 16.13 on Windows

Patrick R.
Hi everyone,

just wanted to let you know that the LocaleTest crashes the VM for builds after and including Cog with Spur on Windows version number 16.13. The crash dump does neither contain a Smalltalk nor a C trace and the VM crashes at the primitive 117. It is somewhat unclear what the issue might be. Are there any more information that could help you on that?

AW: [Vm-dev] VM Crash LocaleTest>> beginning with Cog Spur 16.13 on Windows

Patrick R.

Hi everyone,

I have executed some other tests which also failed and boiled it down to the UUID class. After commenting out the primMakeUUID the tests stopped crashing the VM so that seems to be the cause.
I hope that helps somehow :)

Hi Patrick,

Does the VM crash when you evaluate [UUID new] in your image?
If not, then does it happen with [1000000 timesRepeat: [UUID new]]?

AW: AW: AW: [Vm-dev] VM Crash LocaleTest>> beginning with Cog Spur 16.13 on Windows

Patrick R.

Hi Levente,

I was not sure whether I should construct a new BlockClosure or execute the BlockClosure so I did both. :)
Constructing the Block did not crash the VM. Executing both blocks crashed the VM.

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for clarifying this. So UUIDPlugin has issues on Windows. If you
have the time, then please do a binary search on the VM releases to find
when the breakage happened. If I were you, I would start with 3643[1],
because that was released before the recent update of UUIDPlugin, and then
I would go for 3663[2], which was probably released afterwards.

AW: AW: AW: AW: [Vm-dev] VM Crash LocaleTest>> beginning with Cog Spur 16.13 on Windows

Patrick R.

Hi Levente,

I already had the two VM versions set up so that was not a lot of effort. As you suspected the 3643 build works fine while the 3663 build crashes.

Re: AW: AW: AW: AW: [Vm-dev] VM Crash LocaleTest>> beginning with Cog Spur 16.13 on Windows

Patrick R.

I have only quickly installed and tried the FFI package and all tests ran just fine. However, when I open the about the system tool it shows the following:

B2DPlugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1702 (i)
BitBltPlugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1746 (i)
FilePlugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1740 (i)
FloatArrayPlugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1702 (i)
LargeIntegers v1.5 VMMaker.oscog-eem.1746 (i)
Matrix2x3Plugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1702 (i)
MiscPrimitivePlugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1702 (i)
SecurityPlugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1702 (i)
SocketPlugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1716 (i)
SoundPlugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1716 (i)
SqueakFFIPrims
SurfacePlugin Mar 10 2016 (i)
Win32OSProcessPlugin VMConstruction-Plugins-OSProcessPlugin.oscog-eem.53 (e)
ZipPlugin VMMaker.oscog-eem.1702 (i)

So I am not sure whether the FFI Plugin was actually loaded from the dll? Regarding OSProcess, I experience some difficulties loading it and I will tried it again tomorrow with a fresh mind. :)

The thing is that SqueakSSL accesses the interpreterProxy object
differently. It has a setInterpreter function, which probably gets called
by something, but there's no such function for the UUIDPlugin, so I
suspect that interpreterProxy will not be set.
But at this point the only way to find out the real cause is to use a
debugger.

Background information on the UUID bug is here:

http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=7358

In that bug report, we were treating this as a "Linux issue". But presumably
it is a Gnu library problem, and if the Windows VM uses the same libraries,
then it may be subject to the same bug.

Key points from Mantis 7358:

- The bug exists in some, but not all, versions of the runtime library.

- Compiling the plugin as an internal plugin makes the problem go away.

- If you compile the plugin as an internal plugin, but the user does not
have the uuid runtime installed, then the VM will crash.

- Therefore: No matter what you do, you are screwed.

This is the reason that I was very happy when recent improvements in
Squeak trunk made UUID generation so fast that the plugin is really not
needed any more.

The Windows platform code uses Windows's built-in UUID generator[1].
Since this bug hasn't happened before the recent rewrite of the UUID
plugin, I'm fairly sure this is an entirely different issue with similar
symptoms.

My guess is that the UUID generation fails on the machine (the underlying
UuidCreate[2] function returns RPC_S_UUID_LOCAL_ONLY instead of RPC_S_OK),
and the forthcoming interpreterProxy->primitiveFail() crashes, because
interpreterProxy is not set.
But this is just a wild guess, and someone with a Windows machine
and a debugger could easily find out what's going on, since we have an
easy-to-reproduce case.

Unfortunately, those improvements do not worth much without a good source
of randomness available to the image. The problem is that the image side
random number generator is currently initialized with less than 32-bits of
entropy, and that makes it way too likely for UUIDs to not be unique.
