VMs for Pharo 1.1

Hi folks. We are moving on and we need to update VMs for Pharo 1.1. I would like to know the status of each platform and where to get them:

Windows: I remember a new version 4.1 or similar that Andreas did. I remember there was a problem with the windows closing or similar...but I remember Torsten fixed that. Is that integrated in Pharo ? We are able to use that VM ? Torsten, where can I get a Pharo 1.1 Windows VM ? does it include FreeType ? can you update the splash if necessary ;)

Linux: It would be cool to use a new vm, build form scratch. Laurent, I know this seems to be easy now. Is there any current/known problem ? where can I get a working vm with all the gnufication code and FreeType ? How is the speed finally in compare to other vms ?

Mac: John, I am not sure which VM we should use for Pharo 1.1. Can you give us a hint ? known problems ? does it include freetype ?

The idea (actually, just my opinion) is to upload these "latests" and Pharo 1.1 candidate vms to the website so that we can start to test. Soon (thanks a lot to Alexandre Bergel) we will be able to release a first unstable Pharo 1.1.

IMHO we should use 4.0.3.2202 Unix VM from http://squeakvm.org/unix/. This one is packaged in Debian. It has gnuification, Freetype, all tests green, I use it every day :)

If you want a VM from scratch, the way to go is easy_squeakvm, works well too (for me). It would be sexy to put this on the Hudson server and to measure time to run all Pharo tests with different gcc versions (it seems the version of gcc can have a lot of influence on the VM speed).

Let me build and upload a 32bit bias macintosh V5.x VM for people to try later today, since I'd suggest that should be used.

Just to stir up the hornets' nest (with the best of intentions), last summer, Eliot had suggested that December 2009 would see a big release. In fairness, let he who has never slipped a release date cast the first stone :) Knowing how target dates can be, I was not upset to see it pass without VW-crushing byte code speeds for us. However, more recently, Bryce posted something that appeared to question whether the Cog code would be released in the open. That was a little disturbing :(

Hopefully someone in the know can give us lots of good news??

Latest I heard was on May 2., when Eliot wrote on vm-dev (taken out of context):

"I'm now in a position to put some effort into open sourcing Cog, having completed my current Teleplace assignment, and so perhaps being patient and waiting a little longer is the best approach. "

Something was posted about the possibility of Coq being posted into the
open but not by me. I did reply to that post. I've no idea what the
current situation is with Coq or it's release.

My hope is Coq is successful, and of course Exupery is at least as
successful. The community is best served by at least one project
succeeding and preferably both.
