[VW] 2.8a1.390 now available on public store

Bany, Michel
[VW] 2.8a1.390 now available on public store

As requested on this list I published Seaside 2.8 on the public Store repository.

        SeasideForWebToolkit(2.8a1.390.0,mbany)
        SeasideForSwazoo(2.8a1.390.0,mbany)

both are based on Squeak version Seaside2.8a1-lr.390, July 4, 2007.

I also published Scriptaculous based on its most current Squeak version.

        SeasideScriptaculous(2.8a1.205.0,mbany)

based on Squeak version Scriptaculous-mb.205, July 6, 2007.

The version number for Scriptaculous in the public Store repository (2.8a1.xxx)
is meant to indicate that it will not work with Seaside 2.6 and Seaside 2.7.

Although I did not check, I expect most of the Seaside add-ons to fail with Seaside 2.8
(SeasideAsync, SeasideTesting, WebDesignerTool, SeaChart, ShoreComponents,etc.).

Enjoy,
Michel.

Boris Popov, DeepCove Labs (SNN)
Just saw them in my RSS reader. Given that I only use Seaside and SeasideScriptaculous I'm very excited ;) Thanks a bunch, Michel, as always.

Cheers!

Bany, Michel
One thing I noticed when upgrading to 2.8
the #initialize instance method of components must send #initialize to super.

RE: [VW] 2.8a1.390 now available on public store

Boris Popov, DeepCove Labs (SNN)
Michel,

Okay, just had my first stab at moving up and got as far as getting the home page rendering properly, but am now staring at a memory emergency every time I try to submit a form, still need to poke around to see if its something I did (doubt it, works fine in previous version), but if anyone has any suggestions, please do share.

More thoughts over at,

Cheers!

RE: [VW] 2.8a1.390 now available on public store

Boris Popov, DeepCove Labs (SNN)
Ah, found the sucker...

WAHtmlStreamDocument>>print: anObject
  anObject encodeOn: self

Object>>encodeOn: aDocument
  aDocument print: self displayString

displayString
  ^self

Does #displayString in Squeak always return an instance of String? It doesn't here...

Cheers!

Squeak doesn't have #displayString, we use this just to keep
portability with VisualWorks. #displayString defaults to #asString in
Squeak. Isn't this supposed to return a string as its name says?

Instance of text. In VisualWorks displaystring often is used to add emphaisis etc, so it doesn't always return a string.

Re: [Seaside] [VW] 2.8a1.390 now available on public store

I would suggest adding encodeon to text which would solve the problem when displaystring returns it instead of actual string. But it might not be a bad idea to add safety to object's encodeon to make sure displaystring didn't return self which go into recursion. Nasty, I know.

Cheers!

That sounds good to me, and to Smybol as well while we're at it. That
also simplifyies some Seaside code and makes it better understandable.

What would such code look like?

Re: [Seaside] [VW] 2.8a1.390 now available on public store

Hehe, ever try writing code on a blackberry? :)

Up in objects encodeon fetch displaystring from object, compare == to object, if they are same you have guaranteed recursion and might as well try asstring and give up later... Recursion is pain in VisualWorks because of lack of stack overflow, but michaels package helps a bit. Hard to elaborate without looking at the browser, sorry!

Cheers!

That sounds good to me, and to Smybol as well while we're at it. That
also simplifyies some Seaside code and makes it better understandable.

What would such code look like?

SLint should help you find these. Additionally this is now listed in
as a possible cause of MessageNotUnderstood if the selector is
#contents

On the add-on front:
- RSRSS 2 is go
- PlotKit is go
- ContentDate is go
- StarRater is go
- CssBarGraph is go
- protogrowl has issues that seem to be style and script related
(seems more like the new version of Scriptaculous is the problem
rather than Seaside)
