[VW 7.5] [Bug] [Mac OS X 10.3.9] VM doesn't start

Stew MacLean

Hi,

Further to my previous post, I’ve established that the VM as delivered with this release (…\VisualWorks 7.5.0\bin\macx\visual.app\Contents\MacOS\ visual – 4,115 KB (as displayed by explorer))

running with the shipped virgin image, does not run. It starts briefly, then terminates without any particular feedback as to what the problem is.

I have conducted exactly the same test with the 7.4d version, and this starts the development environment as expected.

To conduct these tests I navigate via terminal to the .\Resources directory and run the open –a command, with a fully qualified name for the visual.app directory (7.4, and 7.5), to ensure that I’m running the correct version of the VM.

The specifics of the machine are:

Hardware Overview:

  Machine Model:  PowerBook G4 15"

  CPU Type: PowerPC G4  (1.1)

  Number Of CPUs: 1

  CPU Speed:      1 GHz

L2 Cache (per CPU):   512 KB

  Memory:   768 MB

  Bus Speed:      167 MHz

  Boot ROM Version:     4.7.1f1

Software Overview:

  System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)

  Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0

Either I’m doing something really stupid, or there is a problem.

Have others attempted running the VW 7.5 Mac OS X VM?

If so, any ideas as to why it won’t run on this machine, and how can I see why it’s failing to get off the ground.

Cheers,

Stewart
